OUR MISSION

To create with purpose. To strive for design excellence at the convergence of Art and Science.

Jeremy Jordan

Over the past 18 years of practice, Jeremy has dedicated himself to the pursuit of design excellence and inspiring others to strive. From initial visioning and documentation to project realization, he played a vital role on many of NBW’s signature projects, ranging from Memorial Park, Houston and Citygarden in St. Louis, Missouri to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania (NBW from 2006-2020).

  • Much of his passion has been focused on restoration ecology and creation of resilient agricultural systems, helping Thomas Woltz to build NBW’s Conservation Agriculture Studio. This body of award-winning work includes productive landscapes and ecological preserves in Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, California, Texas, New Zealand and Australia. Most recently Jeremy co-led the multidisciplinary design team responsible for the Central Connector Project at Memorial Park, Houston, a 96 acre earthwork and coastal prairie ecosystem restoration project, reconnecting two halves of a park divided by a 6-lane road.

Jeremy graduated summa cum laude from Temple University in 2006. While at Temple, he interned for the Olin Partnership from 2004-2006, assisting on several projects including the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York, the Rodin Museum Landscape Restoration in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Bethel Performing Arts Center in Woodstock, New York, and the Logan Square Restoration in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Breck Gastinger

Over his 21 years of professional experience, Breck has applied his background in architecture and landscape to create dynamic, memorable places rich in meaning and experience. For Breck, landscape architecture should be an active, restorative process that weaves systems of ecology and revealed cultural legacies to create places that excite the individual spirit and that promote societal wellness.

  • Since 2000, Breck honed his skills, experiences, and perspectives at Nelson Byrd Woltz (NBW) with the mentorship of Warren Byrd, Thomas Woltz, and a host of many other talented designers and thinkers. As a longtime leader and Senior Associate, he worked on and led design work on projects at a variety of scales and locations. Recently, Breck led design efforts at the Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, in Edmonton, the Cultural Arts Corridor in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the Garden of Light, in King’s Cross, London. He also led work on National ASLA awarded projects for the Orongo Station Master Plan, North Island, New Zealand, the 100-year Master plan for Cornwall Park, Auckland, New Zealand, and Citygarden, St. Louis and was part of the design team for the winning entry for the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, PA.

Breck’s professional career was deeply shaped by his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Virginia. He graduated with distinctions in Architecture (BSarch 98’) (MArch 03’), and Landscape (MLArch 04’), as a dual degree student. He maintains a strong connection to the school as a periodic guest critic and speaker. Though he grew up in Missouri, he lives in Charlottesville with his family. Together they enjoy local advocacy and volunteer work and getting outside to hike and camp whenever they can. Breck is the Vice Chair of the Charlottesville Board of Architectural Review and enjoys the opportunity to promote contemporary design that respects and sustains the historic architecture and cultural landscapes that tell our city’s stories.

SERVICES

LOCAL Design Collective is a landscape architecture, design and art studio dedicated to mission and craft. We will work at all scales, across a wide range of disciplines, striving for design excellence in everything we do. Our goal is to realize thoughtfully conceived, finely detailed and well constructed projects.

  • We offer full spectrum landscape design services, from early visioning and concept design through design documentation and construction administration.

  • We are focused on localized research, design and documentation for large tract working and productive landscapes, small farms, as well as ecological preserves/reserves. LOCAL can assemble the perfect team of discipline specific experts and professionals to inform the design process; we will facilitate these collaborations to assure a cohesive plan evolves. We can then provide complete design and documentation services, followed by long-term ecological monitoring plans and strategies.

  • We aspire to engage and collaborate with patrons, artists and other designers on sculptures, installations and earthworks, whether working to site and frame existing works or entirely new and original commissions.
